The clothes we wear tell a lot about us.
Whether you are the type of person who agonizes over which outfit to wear every day or you just throw something on, whether you pay attention to every detail of your attire or only care that you feel comfortable, the coat you are wearing is truly an extension of yourself.
Of course we don’t all go out and choose clothing that will make a statement about us. We will most likely consider style, but there are other factors that determine what we wear. Weather is, of course, a major consideration.
With warm weather our options are cotton, linen, silk and other lightweight, free moving materials. Cold weather brings the need for heavier fabrics and more layers. Wool is one of the top textiles in colder weather and there really is nothing quite like a Scottish wool sweater.
Wool is a very versatile material. There are all different types, from the coarse, and sometimes scratchy Scottish tweed wool sport coats you find in tweed outerwear right down to the soft and luxurious cashmere woolen sweaters you find in the most exclusive clothing shops.
Scottish wool clothing is often called tweed. This is a raw, coarse material that is itchy to the skin and is therefore only suitable for coats and other thick wool outerwear. It is made of unfinished wool, but it is soft and flexible rather than stiff.
Tweed resembles homespun, but is more tightly spun. It is often woven in a herringbone twill pattern. This is used in a wide range of different articles of clothing from blazers to hunting wear.
As a matter of fact, tweed Scottish wool is commonly worn in Scotland in certain outdoor activities like hunting and shooting, and when the weather is not too cold you will often see people wearing just a boiled wool or Scottish Wool Sweaters instead of a heavier jacket. It is excellent for this type of use because it is very warm and is also water resistant, making it perfect for out of doors.
The traditional green tweed used in Scotland is referred to as lovat. This is the material worn on the outdoor activities previously mentioned.
While tweed was popular in the past, it declined in use in the fashion world over the years, but just recently it is starting to be seen again in stores around the world and is coming back into style.
Wearing Scottish wool is not only for those living in the United Kingdom! Tweed may just be making a big comeback. Its distinctive appearance and warmth containing properties make it perfect for fall and winter wear, and many people can pull off wearing plaid in style.
If you are looking for a wool jacket or coat and want to go for something natural, take a look at tweed. It is renewable, and comfortable. It will keep you warm without overheating you and it comes in a fashionable pattern that is a great look for anything from a casual day out with friends to the office during the week.
